The exact mechanism by which stem cells give rise to different forms of matter is not yet known. Stem cells in red bone marrow undergo two processes called mitosis and cytokinesis. Daughter cells of stem cells differentiate into different cell types. Two types of stem cell exist: totipotent or pluripotent. Both the totipotent and pluripotent stem cells give rise to the various types of human cells. Pluripotent stem cell, however, can give rise to many types of cells in the body, including the membranes of a fetus.
